With training camp less than two weeks away, the Cleveland Cavaliers are likely to be without their biggest offseason acquisition.
But don’t panic, Andrew Bynum fans. No one expected the 7-footer to sprint at the start. Not after missing all of last season in Philadelphia with knee issues.
The Cavs haven't set a specific timetable for Bynum’s return to actual game action -- but they do have a plan. It’s to make sure Bynum is completely healthy before he ever puts on a uniform. In other words, the Cavs won’t rush him back just to quash any sort of fan anxiety.
Training camp begins Oct. 1, with the Cavs’ first preseason game a week later (vs. the Milwaukee Bucks).
One source familiar with Bynum’s progress told FOX Sports Ohio that Bynum is nowhere near ready and is likely to miss the entire preseason. He could, however, give it a go early in the regular season, if not for the opener Oct. 30 vs. the Brooklyn Nets.
Bynum turns 26 years old three days before the season. He put together a career year in 2011-12, averaging 18.7 points and 11.8 rebounds, and played in 60 of a possible 66 games with the Los Angeles Lakers.
Other NBA News
• Former Cavs and Miami Heat guard Ricky Davis was among those who have worked out for the New York Knicks recently, league sources said. Davis, who turns 34 in a week, hasn’t played in the NBA since the 2010 season.
• Like most teams, the Lakers have been getting together for workouts. In fact, everyone on the team (except Pau Gasol and the injured Kobe Bryant) took part in a scrimmage at the practice facility Tuesday, according to Lakers.com reporter Mark Trudell.
• As an added bonus for Lakers fans, Trudell also reported that point guards Steve Nash and Steve Blake were “among those looking good.”
• All 15 players on the New Orleans Pelicans’ roster have also hit the practice facility for voluntary workouts, said general manager Dell Demps. With newcomers Jrue Holiday and Tyreke Evans joining holdovers Anthony Davis, Ryan Anderson and Eric Gordon, the Pelicans think they have a shot to soar into the postseason.
• Along with the new nickname, the Pelicans are sporting a new practice facility -- which just happens to be on the same campus as the NFL’s New Orleans Saints.
• The Boston Celtics waived forward Donte Green on Tuesday. Green spent four seasons with the Sacramento Kings and is expected to head overseas. His most notable NBA accomplishment may have been scoring 40 points in his summer-league debut with the Houston Rockets (2008).
