The 2014 FIBA World Cup in Spain will present a very tough challenge for the Philippine national men’s basketball team.
Even traditional Asian powerhouses like China and Iran have struggled heavily on the world level, and Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes knows his squad will be at a disadvantage against the best basketball teams from around the world.
Still, Reyes doesn’t want his team to just be happy to be there.
“The objective is to be competitive. Obviously, if you just think about it now, we’re ages, we’re light years away from the South American, the European, the North American group,” Reyes said.
“The US, Puerto Rico, and the Europeans — France, Lithuania, Spain — and then the South Americans like Argentina, Dominican Republic — we’re very far from those teams now. But we have one year to close that gap.”
But the coach isn’t making unrealistic expectations of the team.
“We have no illusion of beating these top teams but we are really looking forward to competing hard against them.”
