Former Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) import Jamelle Cornley was arrested for allegedly assaulting a Quezon City policeman who tried to pacify him when he made a scene at a hotel.
Cornley, who used to play for Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, is presently detained at the Quezon City Police District Station 10 and facing possible charges of direct assault.
Station commander Superintendent Marcelino Pedrozo said Cornley allegedly punched PO2 Armando Lazatin after the latter tried to pacify him at a Quezon City hotel.
Pedrozo said Cornley allegedly lost P60,000 and was shouting at the staff of the Sir William’s Hotel prompting them to call police assistance.
Two policemen arrived and tried to calm him down but Cornley allegedly punched Lazatin and was arrested. Lazatin was brought to the East Avenue Medical Center for treatment.
According to radio reports, Cornley denied that he assaulted the policeman, insisting that he was the aggrieved party as he lost money.
Reports also showed that Cornley’s former teammates visited him at his detention cell.
Cornley led the Elasto Painters to the franchise’s first championship in last year’s Governors’ Cup, winning Best Import honors for the conference. He injured his knee in the finals series against the B-MEG Llamados and chose to stay in the country to recuperate.
HE COULD BE BANNED FROM THE LEAGUE

Even though he is not a current PBA player, former Rain or Shine import Jamelle Cornley could still face a ban from the pro league in light of the incident that led to his recent arrest.
“If the allegations and charges in this incident are proven to be true, I see Mr. Cornley as having zero chance of playing in the PBA again, at least not under my watch,” said PBA commissioner Chito Salud.
Cornley was arrested by officers of the Quezon City Police Department after allegedly punching a policeman after causing a scene at a hotel. He has denied the allegations.
“I understand that this is now a police matter where facts will continue to be established,” said Salud. “Mr. Cornley is not currently associated with the pba in any manner whatsoever.
“Be that as it may, I’d perhaps take the occasion to remind our players that playing in the PBA is imbued with public interest and they are thus subject to close public scrutiny within the context of higher standards and expectations.”
Earlier this month, the PBA banned and blacklisted another import, Petron’s Renaldo Balkman, for a meltdown during the Boosters’ match against the Alaska Aces.
