MANILA, Philippines – Alex Ariza, the strength and conditioning coach of Filipino fight king Manny Pacquiao, has no problem with the Pacman’s decision to extend his training in his hometown of General Santos City.
Pacquiao was supposed to arrive at the Wild Card Gym in Hollywood last weekend, but decided to stay in General Santos to take care of personal matters.
His decision worried promoter Bob Arum, who is concerned that the boxer may once again be getting distracted. But Pacquiao’s trainer, Freddie Roach, also said he is not worried.
In an interview with Ronnie Nathanielsz of PhilBoxing, Ariza echoed Roach’s sentiments, saying he has “no problem” with Pacquiao’s decision to extend his GenSan training.
“I am a firm believer in a shorter, more intense camp than a long camp. I think it’s a good thing that he can work at his own pace and develop as you go,” Ariza said.
“Then, when you get closer to the fight, you pick up the intensity for a shorter amount of time,” he added.
“(Pacquiao) is supposed to train at one speed, at a hundred percent, but over a long period it is a little bit too much.”
Ariza said he will work with Pacquiao once the boxer makes it to Los Angeles, and is hoping that Pacquiao has realized that “he has to change some things in his physical conditioning.”
Ariza conceded that Marquez has a good strength and conditioning coach of his own, Angel Heredia.
“He is very smart, and whatever mistakes he made with Marquez the last time, I don’t think he’ll make it this time,” he said.
