Two new NBA D-League ball clubs have taken interest at high-flying Pinoy dribbler Japeth Aguilar, who asked permission to leave his PBA mother team Talk 'N Text to pursue his dream to play in the NBA.
Player agent Marvin Espiritu, told PTV Sports that the 25-year-old Aguilar was called for a tryout by Iowa Stampede, and the Santa Cruz Warriors, but maintained that the Bakersfield Jam (affiliated with the Atlanta Hawks, Los Angeles Clippers, and Phoenix Suns and currently have NBA players like Eric Bledsoe and David Ebanks in their roster) is the team that has been showing the most interest.
“He is just waiting for an invitation to join training camp," Espiritu said in the interview, and continued, "because after you get invited to training camp, the next step is playing for a contract. After October, we will find out if Bakersfield offers him an actual contract."
And because Aguilar is still in the US, he will likely miss the entire Philippines Cup of the current PBA season which started last weekend. His team Talk 'N Text debuted with a 112-110 win on Friday night against the Meralco Bolts. Aguilar did not agree to sign a contract with the Tropang Texters even when they offered him a maximum contract. Espiritu said that although they have not renewed allegiance with the Texters, the team supports him in pursuing his NBA dream.
And with the question of when the former Western Kentucky Hill Topper will be back in the Philippines, the 2nd generation player agent Espiritu said that it will all depend on how he fares in the US. “He'll definitely miss the All-Filipino Cup. It depends if he doesn't accept, or won't be given an offer. The PBA will always be here for him and he knows that, and Talk 'N Text supports him fully,” said Espiritu.
