The Volcanoes began the day with a tough matchup against Asian powerhouse Japan in the knockout quarterfinal round. Japan manhandled the Philippine side, 48-5, to send the Volcanoes into the consolation pool.
The Filipinos rebounded with a 19-17 victory over United Arab Emirates to set up the clash for fifth place against Chinese Taipei.
The Malaysia tilt marked the first official tournament for the Volcanoes under new coach Al Caravelli, who onced coached the United States.
The Borneo Sevens is the first event in the HSBC Asian Sevens Series 2012, which serves as qualifier for the Rugby World Cup Sevens. The Volcanoes will next see action in the Shanghai Sevens in Pudong, Shanghai on September 22-23.
