New IBF super-bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire is ready
to defend his now unified titles against former WBO title holder Jorge Arce in
late 2012, according to manager Cameron Dunkin.
Donaire, 29, overcame Jeffrey Mathebula on points last
Saturday night to claim a sixth career world title, unifying a third weight
class in the process and has stated that he is hoping to claim another title at
122lbs.
However, a clash with the Mexican five-time world champion
is seen as a lucrative match-up and Dunkin has revealed that he has an
arrangement in place with Arce which could be finalized in the for later in the
year.
“It’s Arce either in October or November. We are committed
to fight Arce, we have an agreement, a verbal agreement to fight.” Dunkin told
the Philippine Daily Inquirer.
WBA champion Guillermo Rigondeaux has also been mentioned as
a focus for Donaire as he holds one of the two world titles that still elude
the ‘Filipino Flash’ at the weight, with the other being WBC belt holder Abner
Mares.
“We also have a
verbal agreement to fight another guy and then we start looking at (WBA
champion Guillermo Rigondeaux),” Dunkin added.
