MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) - The Philippine Under-23 football team lost their first game in the 2011 Southeast Asian Games in Indonesia, falling to Vietnam, 1-3, Thursday night.
The junior Azkals had the lead in the first half, after Manny Ott struck in the 37th minute.
But the team's defense broke down in the 2nd half, with Matthew Hartmann's own goal in the 57th minute allowing Vietnam to equalize.
Vietnam struck again in the 72nd minute and again in the 91st minute (injury time).
Vietnam enjoyed 71% of the ball possession over the junior Azkals, but goalkeeper Roland Mueller prevented a blowout loss by saving numerous goal attempts made by the Vietnamese.
Ott, the lone goalscorer for Azkals, almost did not join the team. He only decided a couple of days before the competition that he will go to Indonesia.
It was the first meeting between the two squads since the Azkals shocked Vietnam in the 2010 AFF Suzuki Cup, 2-0.
Vietnam, ranked 134th by FIFA, won the silver medal in the previous SEA Games.
