Senate ressurects "Super Body" Bill for Philippine Sports

Calls for a creation of a Philippine Sports Authority have been revived at the Senate.
Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman Ricardo Garcia said that the possible creation of a bigger sports body was discussed during a Senate hearing with Games, Amusements and Sports Committee Wednesday.
Garcia said that he is not against the creation of such a sports super body that will eventually result in the abolishment of the PSC, the government’s sports arm since 1990.
“It will elevate sports to a higher level,” said Garcia in the PSC’s radio program on government station DZSR.
The Philippine Sports Authority was proposed by Philippine basketball great and former Sen. Robert Jaworski that will place all sectors of sports—amateur, professional, grassroots, among others—under one roof. The PSA head will also be a member of the Cabinet.
The proposed bill was one of the talking points during the committee hearing called by Games, Amusements and Sports Committee chairman Sen. Koko Pimentel.
Garcia said that sports will be a top priority by the government once a new super body will be created.
“If the bill is approved, the chairman will be a secretary and we will now have the ears of the president because it is a Cabinet position,” Garcia said.
“We don’t have strong objections but it is something that should be looked into. If it is approved, we will just have to follow. But of course, the details of the law should be worked out first,” Garcia also said.
Another topic that the Senate had asked to be clarified was their perception that the PSC is being dictated upon by the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) headed by Jose “Peping” Cojuangco Jr.
“Nobody is dictating over the other. I don’t think it’s an issue because the POC is an entirely different organization,” said Garcia.
