PBA North All Stars |
BORACAY – Marc Pingris was the life
of the pre-All-Star Game press
conference Saturday, making
digs at the opposing team and vowing
they would repeat their 2010 victory.
He was not bluffing after all.
The B-MEG Derby Ace workhorse delivered a mammoth game, leading the North team to a 133-129 win over
the South in the centerpiece event of the 2011 Hala Bola! PBA All-Star Week at the Boracay
Eco-Village and Convention Center here Sunday night.
He made good his promise during the prescon and stood tallest at the close of the all-star
spectacle.
He came through with a solid game highlighted by key plays at the finish, and rewarded himself with
the All-Star Game MVP award and the P20,000 cash prize that went with it.
North duplicated its successive wins in 1993 and 1994, and made it 6-4 in its overall head-on duels
versus South.
Pingris had a big hand in the North’s follow-up to their 133-131 win in Puerto Princesa, Palawan
last year with the 6-foot-4 Pangasinense native collecting a game-high 24 points that went with nine
rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block.
He grabbed a big defensive rebound and scored underneath on an assist by LA Tenorio as the
Northerners made it 132-129 with time down to 12.4 seconds.
It was a close All-Star Game marked by 15 deadlocks and 23 lead changes. The Southerners yielded the
contest when they went scoreless in the last 1:17 of play.
James Yap, Dondon Hontiveros and Jimmy Alapag missed a three-point attempt each in the final minute.
Kerby Raymundo, Arwind Santos, Willie Miller and LA Tenorio helped the North team through, all
churning out significant numbers.
Raymundo piled up 19 point and 11 rebounds, Santos logged 21 points and five rebounds, Miller put in
16 points and five rebounds while Tenorio chipped in 10 points, 10 rebounds and four assists.
Pingris and Raymundo were there for the North team as the Southerners tried to break away early.
The Derby Ace frontliners combined for 34 points to lead North’s bid in the first 24 minutes of
play.
The North team upstaged the South right at the “call-out” ceremony with the Northerners
titillating the crowd as they gyrated to the tune of Shakira’s “Waka Waka.”
The Southerners threatened to break away early, opening a 10-point lead in the first quarter, but
the Northerners waged a chase in the second period and trailed by only one, 70-71, at the half.
Behind the outside bombs of Tenorio and inside attacks by Pingris and Raymundo, the North team
surged ahead, 53-48, midway through the second canto.
But a triple from way, way out by Alapag sent South back on top at 55-53, and the two teams engaged
in a neck-and-neck battle all the way to the finish.
Danny Seigle, playing off the bench, paced South in the opening half with 12 points. Hontiveros,
Yap, Asi Taulava and Jay Washington added at least eight apiece.
Pingris showed a determined effort right from the start, coming through with 12 in the first period.
