MANILA – Despite holding practices once a week, the Philippine national team still has a lot of work to do with less than four months until the FIBA-Asia Championship.
“(The offense) is still not as smooth and as sharp as I would like,” admitted Gilas-Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes in an interview with Solar Sports Desk.

While the Gilas players are setting aside time to practice with the national team, most of them are also busy concentrating on the upcoming PBA Commissioner’s Cup playoffs – which is set to start on Friday.
“Remember the players still have their own team on their minds… so dalawa yung pinag-iisipan nila kaya mahirap,” added Reyes.
“But the players are very much comfortable with each other - they’re at ease already. When we want to run through the offensive stuff that we are preparing, they already have an idea.”
“There's very little you can achieve in once a week practices, except maybe to be able to get some stuff down,” shared Reyes.
After Gilas-Pilipinas plays exhibition games against the PBA All-Stars and the Shanghai Sharks, Reyes is targeting to start their daily practices on the last week of May.
In spite of the lack of time polishing offensive sets in practice, Reyes was quick to point out how important the bonding between the players is.
“We’re mostly working on camaraderie and just being familiar with each other. Having our dinners after our practice, it goes a lot towards building chemistry outside the basketball court.“
