Chris Tiu sees good fit for Petron, Meralco

Chris Tiu swears that he has no particular preference whichever team picks him in Sunday’s rookie draft.
“I hope I get picked,” Tiu said. “Maski saang team naman ako as long as I will able to play. That’s the main reason why I decided to enter the rookie draft. Gustong-gusto ko kasi makalaro.”
Despite his modesty, the former SMART-Gilas Pilipinas team captain figures to be drafted early, with Petron and Meralco, which are picking third and fourth, respectively, looking like early favorites to take the combo guard.
Tiu sees himself as a good fit with either team.
The Boosters would bring the familiarity of being around personalities from SMART-Gilas, including the national team’s former coach, Rajko Toroman, who currently serves as team consultant. The team also features former SMART-Gilas wingmen Chris Lutz and Marcio Lassiter.
“Coach Toroman is just a different level coach,” said Tiu. “I really respect him and I know I will fit well with his system. Chris and Marcio are exceptional athletes.”
If the Bolts pick him, Tiu sees himself bringing stability to an already explosive backcourt rotation.
“Playing alongside Sol [Mercado] and Mac [Cardona], who are among the best one-on-one offensive players in the league would be interesting too,” he said. “I like to create plays and shoot from the outside so hopefully it will make life easier for them and the team.”
There also exists some SMART-Gilas connection. Apart from center Jason Ballesteros and Mercado, who played for the national squad in the 2010 Asian Games, Bolts coach Ryan Gregorio also served as an assistant to Toroman in the 2011 FIBA Asia Championship and remains a fan of Tiu’s game.
