MANILA, Philippines – Golden Boy Promotions president and former world champion Oscar De La Hoya is convinced that sooner or later, undefeated American star Floyd Mayweather Jr. will meet his match inside the boxing ring.

De La Hoya lost to Mayweather via split decision when they fought in May 5, 2007, but the “Golden Boy” believes that the time will come when Mayweather will experience his first career loss.

“No fighter is invincible. At some point, Mayweather will run into that as well,” De La Hoya said in a Boxing Scene interview.

“He is a tremendous talent, but it is not easy to stay undefeated in this game. Eventually, that ‘0’ has to go,” he added.

Puerto Rican boxer Miguel Cotto is the latest fighter to try and give Mayweather his first defeat. Cotto will defend his World Boxing Association junior middleweight championship against Mayweather on May 5 in Las Vegas.

“I think anyone who faces Floyd Mayweather will have little chance of winning,” De La Hoya said. “He has a great defense, but he is not a perfect fighter. He has never faced Miguel Cotto.”

De La Hoya said Cotto has “the right game plan and the perfect corner” for his fight, but added that Mayweather’s mentality about boxing gives him an advantage.

“Mayweather just wants to win the fight, no matter what,” De La Hoya said. “If Miguel can have that same mentality, it will be a problem for Mayweather.”

De La Hoya is already expecting a “very interesting” battle between the two boxers.

“Miguel Cotto is a strategist. He will wait and he will be patient. Will Mayweather be able to dictate the pace? Will Miguel’s patience be a problem for Mayweather? It will be very interesting,” he said.

“If there is a perfect time to beat Mayweather, it is now,” De La Hoya added.
