English club Chelsea will be powering a football camp through the Younghusband Football Academy before both entities set their sights on launching a full-blown football school in the Philippines.

Dubbed the Chelsea FC Soccer School Summer Camp, it will be held at the Evia Football Field in Las Pinas on April 17, 19, 24, 26, May 3, 8 and 10 and will be handled by Dave Stewart, football program development manager of the Chelsea FC Soccer School in Hong Kong.

The culminating activity will be held on May 15 at the SM Mall of Asia with the Chelsea Soccer School also to be formally launched on the same day.

“This is just the start and we hope to have a very long and successful relationship with Chelsea,” said Philippine national football star striker Phil Younghusband during a press conference Monday at the GroupM offices in Picadilly Star building at the Bonifacio Global City in Taguig City.

“We have ups and down in terms of football in the Philippines but we are glad the sport is getting there and the program will be a big step to Philippine football,” said Phil’s brother James Younghusband in the same presser.

Before becoming members of the Azkals, the Younghusband brothers were part of the Chelsea system being members of the youth squad.

Paul Kam, chairman of ProEvents which organizes Chelsea’s programs throughout Asia, said that the summer camp and the school is aimed toward expanding the club’s “Blue Pitch” program which develops the youth from all over Asia.

“In about a couple of years, we hope to have six or seven ‘Blue Pitches’ and I’m very happy that the brothers are here to support the program. It’s a very unique partnership that we have with their connection with Chelsea and I’m happy that the brothers are here to support it,” said Kam.
