Alton Lister, a 16-year NBA veteran who spent the last three seasons with the San Miguel Corporation, has switched camps.

Lister currently serves as a skills coach for the Meralco Bolts, and is set to join the coaching staff of the SMART-Gilas Pilipinas national team.

The news was confirmed to InterAKTV by Aboy Castro, a member of the management committee of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas.

Meralco and SMART-Gilas are both bankrolled by businessman Manuel V. Pangilinan.

A first-round draft choice (21st overall) in the 1981 by the Milwaukee Bucks, Lister also saw action for the Seattle Supersonics, Golden State Warriors, Boston Celtics and the Portland Trailblazers.

In 2000, Lister became head coach of the Mesa Community College. He also became part of Pete Newell’s acclaimed Big Man Camp before joining the Atlanta Hawks coaching staff in 2007.

A year later, he was recommended by American coach Paul Howard, a close friend of former San Miguel coach Ron Jacobs, to the Beermen, with whom he spent the past three years as  skills coach.

Petron Blaze coach Ato Agustin said Lister’s contract ended with the team at the end of the season.

Lister will be part of the Big Man Camp organized by the SBP and the MVP Sports Foundation alongside NBA star Javale McGee and Ateneo Blue Eagles coach Norman Black.

The event will be free of charge, but slots will be limited. The event will be held on October 22, Saturday, 1 p.m. at the  Moro Lorenzo Gym in Ateneo.
