BACOLOD CITY, Negros Occidental, Philippines — Donnie “Ahas” Nietes of the Philippines became a two-division world champion late Saturday night by scoring a unanimous but unpopular decision over rugged Mexican lefty Ramon Garcia at the St. La Salle Coliseum.

The win awarded Nietes the World Boxing Organization (WBO) light-flyweight title. Judge Lisa Giampa of Nevada scored it 118-110, while Carlos Ortiz of New Yo saw it 117-111 and Filipino Danrex Tapdasan had it at 115-113. The Manila Bulletin scored it a draw.
Nietes controlled the first five rounds but Garcia clawed back beginning the sixth and even put the hometown fighter on the verge of being stopped several times.
Nietes came back in the 11th when the crowed began chanting his name in an effort to cheer him up as some of the spectators started to head out of the arena.
Nietes had also held the WBO minimum weight title before deciding to jump up in weight.
