QUEZON CITY, Philippines – Filipino cue master Dennis "Robocop" Orcollo scored a victory over Malta's Tony "Tornado" Drago, 8-2, in the opening of the Party Poker World Pool Masters on Saturday in SM North Edsa.
It was a good start for the Bugsy Promotions top player, the defending titlist.
“In this winner's break format, it’s important that you start the match well. Any mistake can easily lead to a loss because it’s such a short game and the players competing are so talented,” said Orcollo.
“So far, I’m pleased with how I am playing and I look forward to bringing this momentum to the next round and hopefully all the way to the championship," he added.
Orcollo did not waste time by taking a 6-1 commanding lead against Drago in the tournament which offers a $20,000 top prize.
Orcollo’s error on the No.7 ball allowed Drago to cut the lead at 6-2 count before the Filipino took over the last 2 racks.
"It's still too early to tell if Dennis will retain the title, although it's a good start," said his patron, Billiards Managers and Players Association of the Philippines (BMPAP) co-founder Ceferino "Perry" Mariano.
Orcollo will next face the winner between Chang Jung-Lin of Chinese-Taipei and Shane Van Boening of the United States.
