MANILA, Philippines – The long awaited fight between Sarangani Representative Manny Pacquiao and undefeated American welterweight Floyd Mayweather may finally happen in May 2012.
Pacquiao, who holds eight titles in as many divisions, told House reporters Tuesday that he and Mayweather will first have to defeat their respective opponents this year before they can finally arrange a showdown.
“Maybe in May next year,” said Pacquiao when a reporter asked him about the most likely date of what many anticipate will be a megabout.
Negotiations between the two fighters have fallen through several times, often with both camps trading bitter barbs.
On November 12, 2011, Pacquiao will face Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez for the third time.
Their first clash, in 2004, ended in a draw although Pacquiao knocked Marquez down in the first round. He later punched his way to a split decision win in their second encounter in 2008.
“I will start training for my fight with Marquez next month in Baguio. Then, itutuloy ko ang training ko sa (I will continue my training in the) US,” said Pacquiao.
Mayweather will be facing Victor Ortiz on September 17. During the buildup for the match, Mayweather said he definitely wants to fight Pacquiao.
